Understanding Global Service Data

Global Service Data (GSD) is a proprietary dataset created by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). Exclusive to Code-X, GSD provides orthopaedic-specific guidance on the services included—and not included—in each surgical CPT code.

Unlike general billing guidance, GSD is based on comprehensive orthopaedic knowledge and is designed specifically to help users understand the full scope of services associated with orthopaedic procedures.

What Information Does Global Service Data Include?

For each applicable CPT code, the GSD tab details the services that are considered part of the procedure, including services performed:

Pre-operatively – Services provided before the surgical procedure
Intra-operatively – Services performed as part of the surgical procedure
Post-operatively – Services provided following the procedure

GSD also identifies services that are not included in the surgical CPT code.

How Can Global Service Data Help?

By providing procedure-specific guidance developed from an orthopaedic perspective, GSD can help users better understand the expected scope of a CPT code.

Rather than relying solely on broad global billing rules, users can review GSD for detailed information about the services associated with a specific orthopaedic procedure. This added level of specificity can help clarify whether a service is considered part of the procedure or falls outside its bundled services.

Accessing Global Service Data in Code-X

When available for a CPT code, Global Service Data can be accessed directly within the code's information in Code-X using the GSD tab. When searching for CPT codes, codes with GSD are marked with this symbol.
